Frequently Asked Questions

Counseling is a confidential, non-judgmental space to talk through what’s weighing on you. You bring your experience and goals; we bring training and perspective. Together we make sense of what’s happening and build tools that last. Sessions are typically 55 minutes, and we move at the pace that works for you.

A wide range. Common reasons people come in include anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, grief, stress, self-esteem, boundaries, and personal growth. Relationship concerns come up often too — communication, conflict, marriage issues, and the dynamics you carry from your family of origin. If something is affecting your quality of life, it’s worth bringing in.

Start with a free 15-minute phone consultation. We’ll talk about your goals, what you’re hoping to work on, and how we practice — and you can see whether it feels like a good fit. The client-therapist relationship is one of the biggest factors in outcomes, so it’s worth taking the time to find someone you trust. You’re in the driver’s seat, and it’s completely okay to meet with a few therapists before deciding.

The first session runs up to 75 minutes so we have room to get grounded. We’ll talk about what brought you in, your history, and what you’re hoping to change. We’ll also walk through the intake paperwork and leave space for any questions you have.

Most clients start with weekly or every-other-week sessions to build momentum. As progress is made, we can adjust the frequency based on your needs and schedule. Some clients find relief in a few months, while others benefit from longer support. We’ll regularly assess your goals and progress to ensure counseling is beneficial for you. Ultimately, the goal is to work ourselves out of a job and help you build the resiliency and tools you need to handle what life throws your way.

Yes — we offer telehealth sessions for anyone located in Washington State. Research shows online counseling is as effective as in-person for most concerns, and it’s often more convenient when travel, childcare, or your schedule would otherwise be a barrier. That said, we find in-person sessions add a depth of connection that’s hard to replicate on video, so we encourage coming into the office when it works for you.

We work with late teens and adults. If you’re looking for younger children, we can refer you to trusted colleagues who specialize in that work.

If you’re in a psychiatric emergency, call 911, call or text 988 (the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), or go to the nearest emergency room. If you’re an established client, you can have emergency services contact your Renew Counseling therapist. Once you’re stabilized, call your therapist and leave a message — we’ll follow up the next business day.

Yes. Your privacy is protected by professional ethics and federal law. There are a few situations where we’re legally required to break confidentiality: an immediate threat of harm to yourself or others, abuse of a minor, dependent adult, or elder, or a court order to release records.

Please give us at least 24 hours’ notice to avoid a cancellation fee. Genuine emergencies are handled without charge. If a late cancellation is unavoidable, we’ll try to reschedule you within the same week so the fee doesn’t apply. Full details are reviewed during your first session. If scheduling regularly becomes a challenge, we’ll find a rhythm that works better. When we have to cancel, you won’t be charged.

No — as mental health counselors in Washington State, we don’t prescribe medication. If we think medication might help, we’ll refer you to a psychiatrist or coordinate with your current provider. Outcomes tend to be best when counselors and prescribers work together, and we’ll do what we can to support that.

Opting not to bill insurance lets us provide the highest quality of care without the constraints insurers often impose — predefined session counts, required diagnoses, and mandated treatments. It also protects your privacy, since your records don’t have to be shared with a third party, and it supports a more personalized, collaborative therapeutic experience.

We provide superbills for clients whose insurance reimburses out-of-network counseling services. If that’s something you want to pursue, ask your insurance company: “Does my plan cover out-of-network counseling services?”

Jessica and Steven are both Christians, which shapes who we are but doesn’t define how we practice. We provide evidence-based counseling, and clients of any faith background — or none — are equally welcome and respected. If integrating faith or spirituality into your work is meaningful to you, we’re glad to include it. If it isn’t, we’ll focus entirely on the work and goals that matter to you.

Modalities Explained

The world of counseling offers an array of tools, techniques, and approaches, commonly known as "modalities." Below is a brief overview of the various techniques you may encounter at Renew Counseling.

EMDR is a unique therapy developed to alleviate distress from traumatic memories, often used for treating trauma. Through guided eye movements, a therapist helps clients reprocess these memories, making them feel less intense and more distant. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR is brief and direct, often providing relief in fewer sessions. If you’re grappling with unsettling memories, EMDR might be the transformative approach you need.

Both EFT and EFIT are emotion-centered therapeutic approaches grounded in the belief that emotions play a pivotal role in identity and decision-making. EFT, utilized with couples, focuses on fostering and restoring emotional bonds, recognizing negative interaction patterns, and emphasizing emotional connection to strengthen relationships. EFIT, tailored for individuals, draws from similar principles, concentrating on understanding, regulating, and transforming emotional experiences. Both methodologies stress the transformative potential of emotions and aim to promote deep emotional awareness and responsiveness. In both contexts, the therapist guides clients to achieve greater emotional congruence, resilience, and improved interpersonal bonds.

IFS is a therapeutic approach that recognizes multiple sub-personalities or “parts” within an individual. These parts may have conflicting roles or desires, which can lead to internal strife and emotional challenges. IFS therapy helps clients understand, appreciate, and integrate these various parts to achieve greater self-awareness and healing. The therapist works with the client to heal their wounded parts and balance their internal system.

This therapy emphasizes unconscious processes and the influence of past experiences on present behavior. Clients are encouraged to explore unresolved issues and internalized conflicts from their past to understand how these issues impact their current relationships and behaviors. By bringing these unconscious thoughts and feelings to the conscious mind, clients can gain insight, resolve inner conflicts, and improve interpersonal relationships. The therapist acts as a guide, helping the client to recognize and understand deep-seated patterns and beliefs.

At its core, the Townsend Model suggests that personal growth thrives in an environment characterized by grace (unconditional acceptance), truth (transparent, honest feedback), and time. Such nurturing surroundings foster the development of a person’s “character”. Conversely, in the absence of this environment, “character deficits” may arise, leading to insecure attachment styles, a lack of boundaries, rigid thinking patterns, or feeling unequal to others. These deficits can manifest as symptoms within self (e.g., depression), unhealthy relationships, and decreased functioning in daily life. Our counseling journey aims to pinpoint the root causes of these symptoms. We’ll work together to promote healing and growth at the foundational character level, within a space of grace and truth. As we address these deep-rooted issues, the alleviation of symptoms naturally follows.
